His time of 6.08 seconds was enough to defeat Dimitrii Timofeev in the final, with the Russian clocking 6.31.

Boldyrev thus added gold to the bronze he claimed at the World Cup event at Villars.

The Chamonix bronze went to home climber Bassa Mawem, who managed a super-fast 5.64 in his third place match, in which opponent Qixin Zhong of China fell out of contention.

There was another Chamonix repeat win in the women’s speed final, where Poland’s Aleksandra Rudzinska earned gold in 7.47, six years after her first win in Chamonix.

Silver went to Anna Tsyganova of Russia, who clocked 7.75, while her compatriot Mariia Krasavina claimed her second successive World Cup bronze in a time of 8.18, with France’s Aurelia Sarisson finishing in 11.27.      

Earlier in the day, defending lead champion Janja Garnbret of Slovenia was top qualifier for tomorrow morning’s semi-finals.

Garnbret was among four athletes who managed two tops to earn 3.42 points, the others being Jain Kim of South Korea, Akiyo Noguchi of Japan and Anak Verhoeven of Belgium.

Two men managed to top in both qualifying rounds - Germany's Alexander Megos and Austria's Jakob Schubert both went through with 4.18 points - with defending Lead World Cup champion Romain Desgranges of France also progressing comfortably in fourth place with 7.98 points, with third place going to Garnbret’s compatriot Luka Potocar, who totalled 7.00.
