The Slovakian Bora Hansgrohe rider triumphed on a dramatic uphill sprint finish at the end of a 204.5 kilometres stage five from Lorient.

He made his move in the final 200 metres to beat Italy and Bahrain-Merida's Sonny Colbrelli and Belgium and Quick-Step Floors' Belgian Philippe Gilbert.

All the leading riders were awarded the same time of 4 hours 48min 06sec.

The stage was the hilliest so far and too tough for classic sprinters such as Gaviria to remain in contention.

Belgium's Greg van Avermaet retained the yellow jersey by finishing safely in the bunch.

The BMC Racing rider now leads overall from American team-mate Tejay van Garderen.

Gilbert now lies third, three seconds behind the leader.

Great Britain and Team Sky's Geraint Thomas is now fourth, a further two seconds back.

Australia's Team Sunweb sprinter Michael Matthews was forced to abandon prior to the start of stage five today.

Tomorrow is due to be a  hilly181km stage from Brest  to Mûr-de-Bretagne Guerlédan.
