Hosts Hungary got their Women's Junior World Handball Championship campaign off to a winning start as they edged Brazil in the tournament's opening match in Debrecen.

Hungary claimed a 27-24 victory in the Group A encounter to the delight of the home crowd inside the Fonix Hall venue.

The home side led 11-10 at the break and managed to extend their advantage in the second half on their way to wrapping up a narrow win.

The match was held after an Opening Ceremony took place at the Fonix Hall, which included musical performances and a laser show.

2CELLOS, a Croatian and Slovenian cellist duo, were among the headline acts.

The Ceremony was attended by Katalin Pálinger, vice-president of the Hungarian Handball Association, Vice-Mayor of the city of Debrecen Lajos Barcsa, and International Handball Federation Executive Committee member Frantisek Taborsky.

A total of 11 matches are scheduled across all four groups tomorrow.

Group A continues as Norway face Ivory Coast and Portugal entertain Montenegro.

In Group B, Russia face China, South Korea play Iceland and Slovenia take on Chile.

Defending champions Denmark make their Group C entrance against Angola, while The Netherlands play Paraguay and Romania face Japan.

France versus Croatia is due to open Group D, where Germany clash with Sweden and Spain square-off against Egypt.
