Burundi's Thierry Kinunda has been highlighted by the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF).

The youngster is a member of the THF Academy at the Mahama Refugee Camp in Rwanda.

This has been run as an extension to the Kiziba Taekwondo Academy since February 2018 with Kinunda having practiced taekwondo for two years.

He was one of the very first refugee athletes to join the Academy.

"Thierry believes that taekwondo has greatly impacted his life, having provided him with discipline, confidence and the chance to make many new friends," a THF statement said.

"The young student is thankful towards THF as through the Academy, he now takes part in organised and regular taekwondo trainings.

"He dreams of one day becoming a police officer and is committed to continue improving his self-defence skills through taekwondo."

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue officially announced his plan to establish the THF in his speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, on the 2015 International Day of Peace.

It aims to teach the sport and stage educational programmes with refugees and displaced people around the world.

THF projects are also up and running in Jordan, Turkey, Djibouti and Nepal.
