Brazil claimed two gold medals on the second day of the 2018 Pan American Karate Federation (PKF) Senior Championships in Santiago, winning the men’s under-67 kilograms and women’s under-55kg kumite events through Vinicius Figueira and Valeria Kumizaki respectively.

Figueira beat compatriot Breno Teixeira 6-0 in his final at the Chilean capital’s Polideportivo del Estadio Nacional.

Kumizaki, meanwhile, defeated Cuba’s Baurelis de la Caridad Torres Avverdi 2-0 in their gold medal match.

The men’s under-67kg bronze medals went to Ecuador’s Daniel Viveros and Canada’s Ryan O’Neil.

Canada’s Kathryn Campbell and home favourite Tihare Astudillo Aros completed the women’s under-55kg podium.

There was also success for hosts Chile today thanks to Joaquin Gonzales Lavin’s triumph in the men’s under-60kg kumite event.

He overcame Uruguay’s Maximiliano Larrosa 8-0 in the final.

Panama’s Roberto David Payares Garcia and Venezuela’s Jovanni Martinez were the bronze medallists.

Among today’s other kumite winners was Guatemala’s Cheili Carolina Gonzalez Castillo, who topped the women’s under-50kg podium by beating Colombia’s Paula Andrea Ruiz Restrepo 3-1 in the final.

The bronze medals went to Argentina’s Yamila Ailen Benitez and Brazil’s Jessica de Paula.

In the women’s over-68kg final, Ecuador’s Valeria Echever defeated Colombia’s Shanee Torres Doncel 4-0.

Venezuela’s Omaira Molina and the United States’ Maya Wasowicz were the bronze medallists.

The individual men’s and women’s kata events were also held today.

Antonio Diaz overcame Cleiver Casanova Guerrero 5-0 in an all-Venezuelan men’s final.

The women’s gold medal match saw the US’s Sakura Kokumai beat the Dominican Republic’s Maria Dimitrova by the same scoreline.

Americans Joseph Martinez and Ariel Torres Gutierrez shared the third step of the men’s podium.

Canada’s Rita Ngo and Peru’s Saida Karlen Salcedo Hermoza were the women’s bronze medallists.

Action in Santiago is due to conclude tomorrow.

The men’s and women’s team kumite events are set to take centre stage.

The event marks the 32nd edition of the PKF Senior Championships.
