Millican's triumph was soon followed by a victory for her team-mate Jennifer Thompson in the women's under-63kg event.

She topped the standings with a total lift of 492.5kg.

This was partly achieved by a world record in the bench press, where she lifted 145.5kg.

Her compatriot Samantha Calhoun managed a world record deadlift of 221.5kg, helping her to second place overall on 489kg.

Canada’s Maria Htee ended third on 481kg, following a world record of 183.5kg in the squat event.

An American hat-trick of golds was achieved when Charles Okpoko emerged as the winner of the men's under-66kg competition.

He managed a total lift of 688kg to clinch the gold.

Russia's Sergey Gladkikh and Finland’s Antti Savolainen rounded off the medal positions, as they achieved totals of 670kg and 657.5kg respectively.
