Panama recorded their first victory in the men's tournament at the Hockey Series Open as they beat Costa Rica in Salamanca in Mexico.

Panama had lost each of their opening two matches but finally got a win on the board as they edged their Costa Rican opponents 2-0 at the Cancha de Hockey Siglo XXI.

Yomar Martinez broke the deadlock when he scored the first goal in the 34th minute to give Panama, ranked 73rd in the world, the lead.

Manuel Correa fired in a second 16 minutes later to double Panama's lead.

Their defence managed to hold firm for the rest of the contest as they saw out a comfortable win, which condemned Costa Rica to a third straight defeat.

Panama's women were unable to enjoy the same success as the men as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Guatemala.

The result means the two sides are still chasing their first win of the tournament.

Panama and Guatemala have a point from their three matches so far.

The women's competition in Mexico is due to continue tomorrow as Guatemala play Puerto Rico and Mexico face Canada.

In the men's tournament, Costa Rica take on Puerto Rico before Mexico entertain the United States.
