In arguably the biggest match of the tournament so far, Russia, who lost to Turkey in the final at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, claimed a 7-5 win in Pool C of the women's competition.

Russia were unable to build on their victory over the Turkish team, however, as they drew 4-4 with Japan in their second match at the Baltiska Hallen Venue today.

The Russian team still lead Pool C ahead of Japan, who beat hosts Sweden 6-2 in their other encounter.

Defending champions the United States were also among the winners today as they overcame China for the first time since the final of the Beijing 2008 Paralympics.

The US ground out a 4-2 win in Pool D before they then beat Algeria by the same scoreline later on.

In the men's tournament, defending champions Brazil narrowly beat Germany to maintain their 100 per cent start.

The Brazilian team, who claimed the bronze medal at Rio 2016, earned a narrow 6-3 win over their German opponents in the Pool B encounter.

Reigning champions Lithuania were pushed all the way by debutants Argentina before recording a 10-6 victory in Pool A.

"After this game I feel happy, but anyway we have a lot of fighting in the future, so we did the best for now," said Lithuania's Arturas Jonikaitis.

"But we will have to prove our best tomorrow with the other teams. 

"Our team, we are fighters, we never give up. 

"Everyone feels relaxed and only thinking about games when they are about to start."

The tournament in the Swedish city continues tomorrow.
