Cypriot Marios Georgiou was among the winners on the first day of finals at the International Gymnastics Federation World Challenge Cup in Osijek in Croatia.

Georgiou, the 20-year-old who shot to prominence with two gold medals at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games last month, triumphed with a score of 14.367 in the parallel bars final.

He beat Sercan Demir of Turkey, who was second in 14.300, and Adreys Nin Reyes of Dominican Republic, who was third in 14.100.

Georgiou will go for gold again tomorrow in the high bar event.

Great Britain's Dominick Cunningham won the men's floor event with a score of 14.867 points.

Israel's Artem Dologopyat was second with 14.633 while Nicola Bartolini of Italy was third with 14.600.

Lee Chih Kai of Chinese Taipei also triumphed with a score of 15.333 in the men's pommel horse.

Akim Mussayev of Kazakstan was second, with 14.333, while Vasili Mikhalitsyn of Belarus took third place with 14.100.

Oksana Chusovitina won the women's uneven bars with 14.233 points to beat Slovenia's Tjasa Kysselef, second in 13.800, and Victoria Trykina of Russia, third with 13.733.

There was also gold for Diana Varinska of Ukraine in the uneven bars, with 14.000.

Barbora Mokosova of Slovakia was second with 13.233 and bronze went to Noemi Makra of Hungary, with 13.100.

Action will continue with more apparatus finals tomorrow.
