The event was due to take place at the Mt. San Antonio College, located in Walnut, California.

The USATF Board of Directors claimed to have unanimously made the decision to move due to "continuing litigation surrounding construction of a new Hilmer Lodge Stadium at Mt. San Antonio College".

It is claimed the legal cases have resulted in delays in planning for a successful trials.

"The USATF Board awarded the Olympic Trials to Mt. SAC last June," a statement said.

"A key portion of the bid was a new stadium on the campus of Mt. SAC.

"In August, USATF first learned of two lawsuits seeking to halt construction of the stadium: one between the city of Walnut and Mt. SAC and a second, between United Walnut Taxpayers, a group of local citizens and Mt. SAC.

"The first lawsuit was settled in April, but the second has yet to be resolved.

"With bidding reopened, the USATF Board of Directors will look to re-award the Olympic Trials no later than this June."

The first lawsuit was resolved after the college agreed to conditions which satisfied the City of Walnut last month.

Mt. San Antonio College have claimed both lawsuits have been resolved and claim they would be able to host the trials.

"While we are disappointed, we accept that the terms of the agreement give USATF the authority to withdraw from this commitment," a statement read.

"In June 2017, Mt. SAC was selected to host the 10-day event because of its long history of successfully holding world-class track and field events.

"The USATF referenced litigation from the City of Walnut and United Walnut Taxpayers as the reason for its decision.

"The two lawsuits that were mentioned have either been settled or ruled by a judge in our favour.

"We remain confident in our ability to deliver a completed stadium on time and a successful event.

"However, there are certainly losses at the college, including financial commitments, relationships and thousands of hours of lost time.

"Most importantly, the entire Greater Los Angeles region will lose the economic impact.

"The Mt. SAC Local Organising Committee is ready to execute our plans to host the 2020 event should USATF reconsider their decision.

"Regardless, Mt. SAC looks forward to continuing our established positive relationship with USATF."

The College also stated that their plans to build a stadium for students and the community, as well as hosting events, remains unchanged.
