Australia's Matthew Wearn took advantage of a slip by New Zealand's Sam Meech to snatch the lead in the laser standard category on day three of the European Laser Championships in the French port city of La Rochelle.

Meech, a bronze medallist at Rio 2016, was in the lead coming into today's races following a perfect performance yesterday.

The 27-year-old, however, was unable to replicate that excellent display today, which allowed Wearn to take advantage and sneak into the lead with a total of five points.

Despite his superiority today, Wearn is still on thin ground as Meech is just one point behind in the rankings.

Meech's compatriot Andrew McKenzie currently occupies third spot on 11 points.

Defending champion Nick Thompson from Great Britain improved dramatically after his poor performance yesterday, where he was down in 27th, but he still finds himself in 17th position.

In the radial women's event, The Netherlands' Maxime Jonker continued her fine start to the competition and is still sitting top of the leaderboard on five points, five clear ahead of compatriot and defending champion Marit Bouwmeester.

Belgium's Emma Plasschaert is third on 14 points.

Slovenia's Nik Pletikos still leads the rankings in the radial men's class but he can count himself lucky following a poor performance in one of his races today.

His lead has now dropped from two points to one point ahead of Italy's Federico Tocchi in second.

Defending champion Marcin Rudawski of Poland moved up one place to third and currently has 15 points.

This week’s event, which involves 330 sailors from 48 nations, is a key test before the Sailing World Championships in Aarhus, Denmark, in July and August.

Racing continues tomorrow.
