Serbia's Dragan Ristic claimed his first World Championship gold medal since 2010 by winning the R5 mixed 10 metre air rifle prone SH2 title on day six of the World Shooting Para Sport Championships at the Cheongju Shooting Range in South Korea.

It had looked like Ukraine's Vitalii Plakushchyi, competing in his first World Championship, was set to claim the title following an impressive display.

However, he shot poorly in the latter stages of the match, with one shot scoring just 9.9, meaning Ristic overtook him and beat him to gold with a total of 254.8 points compared to Plakushchyi's score of 253.5.

Following his win, Ristic said: "It has been a long time since my last gold medal and this moment, I cannot say any words to describe it.

"I worked hard for [the] last four years from the last World Championships and now I see it pay off.

"I changed a few things in my technique since but the huge change was my feelings and confidence."

The Serbian also paid tribute to his 37-year-old opponent.

"It was Plakushchyi's first finals, and so a lot of pressure was on him," he said.

"Because of my years of experience, I was able to stay calm.

"But I want to say congrats to Plakushchyi because this is his first World Championships and the silver medal is a success."

Turkey's Hakan Cevic, who competed at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, rounded off the podium with a score of 232.4.

The event in South Korea continues tomorrow.
