Abdulla Sultan Alaryani of the United Arab Emirates produced a stunning comeback to win the R6 50 metres rifle prone mixed SH1 competition at the World Shooting Para Sport Championships at the Cheongju Shooting Range.

The London 2012 Paralympic gold medallist looked like he was going to finish second behind Anna Normann of Sweden, who had dominated the earlier rounds of the final, but he produced a stunning comeback in the final two series of the competition with two scores of 20.5 giving him a final total of 248.6.

Normann's last two series saw her shoot for 19.9 and 20.3, meaning she could only finish second on 248.0 points.

Ju Sungchul of host nation South Korea rounded off the podium thanks to a score of 223.1.

Following his win, Alaryani said: "I was focusing on the conditions of the competition, such as the air.

"I was focusing on the technical parts and forgetting about anything else because I can see the changes [happening around], and I needed to make sure that I was doing the right things."

He added that he hopes his victory made a statement before the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

"Of course I am happy, and I am always thinking the World Championships are the boarding pass to the Paralympic Games," he said.

"As players we think it is important to take part in every Championship and by attending and participating and competing at every Championship, we are confirming that we are ready to compete at the Paralympic Games."
