Dave Harry, the team's Chef de Mission, said: "We would imagine it will be the size of the team which we sent to Melbourne [for the 2006 Commonwealth Games], which was 29 competitors."

 

 

But with many more likely to have met the selection criteria now in place, that may not be enough places and Harry admitted that the Guernsey Commonwealth Games Association (GCGA) had considered that eventuality.

 

He said: "We are looking to fund some additional members, but the bottom line is that they have to be of the right quality to compete at Commonwealth Games level.

 

"The various competitors are reaching their targets, so it is looking like a fairly healthy-sized Guernsey team."

 

The GCGA claimed that their plans are well ahead for the Games in the Indian capital, which open on October 3, 2010.

 

They have appointed Harry as and Angela Stuart as the general team manager.

 

Harry filled the role of general team manager in Melbourne in 2006 and again for the Commonwealth Youth Games team in Pune in October 2008.

 

Guernsey, a British Crown Dependency in the English Channel off the coast of Normandy, which has a population of just 64,000, made their debut in the Games at Edinburgh in 1970 and has been represented at each subsequent event.

 

They have won a total of six medals.

 

Five of the medals have been won in shooting, including the Island's only a gold, which came at the Auckland Games in 1990 when Adrian Breton won the rapid fire pistol  event.
