Sanjeev Rajput ended his long wait for a Commonwealth Games title as he secured India's seventh shooting gold medal at Gold Coast 2018 with victory in the men's 50 metres rifle three positions event today.

The 37-year-old had a silver and a bronze to his name but finally got his hands on gold with a Commonwealth Games record score of 454.5 points at the Belmont Shooting Centre.

Canadian Grzegorz Sych was the interim leader after the prone stage but faded in the standing and was forced to settle for the silver medal on his Commonwealth Games debut with a total of 448.40.

Dean Bale of England, also making his first appearance at the Games, was the recipient of bronze as he scored 441.2 points.

Rajput used his post-event interview to express his hope that shooting will be including at Birmingham 2022 after organisers opted not to include the sport on the programme.

"I don't know how I feel, it's up to the decision committee, but I think definitely the shooting should be there because many nations do really good at it, especially the Indians," he said.

"So it depends if they can let us shoot again in 2022, it would be great.

"It means a lot to India."

Defending champion David Luckman clinched his second gold medal of these Games, adding the Queen's prize individual fullbore crown to the pairs title he won earlier in the week.

Luckman hit 404 points and 49 central bulls, a Games record, to earn a Commonwealth Games double for the second consecutive edition of the event after he also achieved the feat at Glasgow 2014.

Australia's Jim Bailey did enough for silver, while England's Parag Patel took bronze.

A Commonwealth Games record also fell in the men's trap as Welshman Michael Wixey claimed his first Commonwealth Games gold with a total of 46 hits.

Aaron Heading of England fell three short of the dominant Welshman in silver medal position and Brian Galea sealed a rare medal for Malta with bronze on 36 hits.

India finished comfortably on top on the shooting medals table with an overall haul of 16.

Australia were the next best nation having claimed three golds in a total of eight.
