Both 2014 singles champions struck gold at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games lawn bowls here today in nerve-shredding finals.

Jo Edwards of New Zealand admitted that she had nearly given up on defending her title from Glasgow during her epic women's singles final against Laura Daniels of Wales.

"Laura was playing so well, everything I did she just counteracted," said Edwards, who triumphed 21-17.

"Halfway through I felt, 'silver's not a bad colour' but I didn't throw in the towel."

Edwards has spent recent months playing in the Queensland Premier League.

"It's not done me any harm playing in the league, against the top men, you've just got to lift your game and you're playing against some great players too," she said.

Daniels had twice enjoyed a five point advantage in the final before Edwards clawed her way back into contention.

"It was my debut Games," said Daniels.

"My intention was just to play well and whatever happened to walk knowing I had given my everything so to get to the position where I am taking away a medal is beyond my wildest dreams at the moment.

"I can take away the confidence that I can go on and hopefully take further medals."

South Africa's Colleen Piketh beat Canada's Kelly McKerihen 21-17 for bronze.

Earlier in the day, Darren Burnett, a police officer from Arbroath in Scotland, led his side to triples gold in another desperately tight encounter with host nation Australia.

The Scots eventually prevailed 19-14 with Burnett adding to his Glasgow 2014 singles title.

"It went one way and the next way, I was just hoping that come the last end, we could just do enough," he said.

"The second last end was probably the key, we had opportunities to do stuff, it was a great game."

Norfolk Island took bronze, only their second-ever medal at any Commonwealth Games.

Their first was also in lawn bowls, for Carmen Anderson in the women's singles at Victoria 1994.

They beat Canada 19-16 today.
