Spanish star Sandra Sanchez lived up to her billing as the Karate 1-Premier League leg in Rabat got underway at the Moroccan capital's Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Hall.   

The kata grand winner has confirmed her fifth medal of the year after booking a final appearance against Hong Kong's Mo Sheung Grace Lau.

She won all of her bouts via unanimous decision apart from a 4-1 victory over Dilara Eltemur of Turkey, and has now won a medal for 28 international competitions in a row.

"The tournament is very beautiful so far and I am very happy with the way it went for me," said Sanchez. 

"It is my last event before the European Championships so making it to the final is giving me extra motivation.

"The bouts against Mo Sheung Grace Lau are always very difficult so it will be a complicated final for me. 

"I just want to enjoy this moment."

Another star in action was five-time world champion Rafael Aghayev of Azerbaijan who battled into the final of the men's under-75 kilograms kumite.

He will face Dastonbek Otabolaev of Uzbekistan in the final.

Elsewhere, Brazilian champion Valeria Kumizakki qualified for her first final this season in the women's under-55kg kumite.

She will meet England's Carla Burkitt who surprised grand winner Anzhelika Terliuga of Ukraine in the last four.

Grand winner Sadriddin Saymatov of Uzbekistan did not come unstuck as he made the men's 60kg kumite final, setting up a clash with Turkey's Aykut Kaya.

Home fans also had something to cheer as Morocco's Khaoula Ouhammad reached the women's kumite under-50kg final.

She will now meet Japan's Miho Miyahara.

An all Egyptian final was booked in the men's under-67kg kumite with Magdy Hanafy and Ali El Sawy set to collide.

Further categories will now be contested tomorrow before finals day on Sunday (April 8).
