Mongolia came from behind to beat Kuwait as the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Challenge Cup of Asia began in Manila.

The 2017 silver medallists beat Singapore on the opening day of competition and were looking to maintain their strong start against Kuwait, playing their first match.

Kuwait sprung a surprise in the first period of the match, taking a 2-1 lead at the SM Mall of Asia Ice Skating Rink.

Their bright start only seemed to provoke Mongolia, who responded with a blistering spell in the second period.

Five goals without reply saw Mongolia take complete control of proceedings, setting them on course for the victory.

They added a further five goals in the closing period earning Mongolia a straightforward 11-2 victory.

The result puts Mongolia top of the five-team group, with the team set to enjoy a rest day tomorrow.

Kuwait will be hoping to respond when they face host nation the Philippines, with both teams eyeing a first win.

Thailand will look to keep pace with Mongolia when they take on Singapore.

The United Arab Emirates are not defending their title in Manilla.

The team who finish bottom of the standings when the tournament concludes on Sunday (April 8) will be relegated to the second tier.

Malaysia won the Second Division last month and will be promoted to the top division for next year’s event.
