Jamaica’s Briana Williams achieved the women’s under-17 sprint double at the Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA) Games at the Thomas Robinson Stadium.

Williams had already claimed the 100 metres title in Bahamas’ capital Nassau, but was looking to seal the 200m crown.

She achieved the feat by managing a time of 23.11 seconds in the final.

The achievement saw Williams be named as the Sir Austin Sealy Award winner for the most promising athlete of the Games, which were founded by Sealy.

Trinidad and Tobago’s Shaniqua Bascombe ended as the runner-up in 23.75, with Bahamas’ Jaida Knowles rounded off the podium by clocking 28.85.

The under-20 title was earned by Jamaica’s Ockera Myrie, who finished the distance in a time of 23.34.

Gemima Joseph of French Guiana and Bahamas’ Devine Parker rounded off the podium by finishing in 23.70 and 23.77 respectively.

Christopher Taylor continued Jamaica’s success by winning the men’s under-20 title in 20.38, with Bahamas’ Joel Johnson and Xavier Narine of Jamaica rounding off the podium in 20.90 and 21.07.

A Jamaican clean sweep in the 200m events was completed by Rajay Morris, who won the men’s under-17 title in a time of 21.25.

He was followed across the line by his team-mate Andre Bent in 21.42, with Bahamas’ Terrance Jones third in 21.69.

Barbados’ enjoyed success in the men’s under-20 800m, as Jonathan Jones triumphed in a time of 1min 49.58.

Turks and Caicos Islands’ Ken Reyes clinched the silver medal in 1:50.46, while the podium was completed by Jamaica’s Kimar Farquhrason, who ran 1:50.95.

Handal Roban held off a Jamaican challenge to win the under-17 race, with the Saint Vincent and the Grenadines athlete managing a winning time of 1:56.83.

The Jamaican duo of J’Voughnn Blake and Giovouni Henry secured the minor medals in 1:57.64 and 1:58.32.

Jamaica would not be denied in the women’s under-20 event, with Shaqueena Foote triumphing in a time of 2:07.56.

Chrissani May followed her team-mate over the line to win the silver medal in 2:09.00, with the podium rounded off by Guyana’s Joanna Archer in 2:11.62.

St Kitts and Nevis’ Trishanni Warner won the under-17 race in a time of 2:15.73.

Jamaica’s Cherice Cope and Rushana Dwyer rounded off the medal positions, after they ended in times of 2:15.96 and 2:16.46 respectively.

Bahamas have been hosting the Games for the eighth time with 500 athletes from 26 countries competing at the 47th edition of the event.

The CARIFTA Games, open to athletes in under-17 and under-20 categories, are designed to enhance relations between the English-speaking countries of the Caribbean.
