Reigning world champion Gulnaz Gubaydullina secured a commanding victory in the women's final as she produced a controlled performance at the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup in Los Angeles.

The Russian underlined her status as the world number one as she finished seven points ahead of nearest rival Alice Sotero of Italy in the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games host city.

Gubaydullina ended the competition with a total of 1,359 points at the at the Fairplex events complex in Pomona in Los Angeles County to claim her first win of the World Cup campaign.

Sotero was narrowly behind in second place, while the bronze medal went to Tamara Alekszejev of Hungary after she scored 1,341 points.

Julie Belhamri of France was just shy of the podium positions as she was fourth, seven points behind the Hungarian.

Olympic silver medallists Samantha Murray of Great Britain and Elodie Clouvel of France finished fifth and sixth respectively.

"It was a very hard day," the victorious Russian said.

"Everything was hard!

 “I like Los Angeles, I like America, every time I come here the people are very friendly."

Gubaydullina saved her best performance for the pool as she was the fastest of all the competing athletes in a time of 2min 08.45sec, handing her a score of 295 points.

The Youth Olympics bronze medallist and European mixed champion was eighth in the fencing, 19th in riding and sixth in the crucial laser-run.

The event in the American city continues tomorrow with the men's final.
