World Taekwondo Europe (WTE) has penned a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kukkiwon - the World Taekwondo headquarters.

The partnership was agreed in Greek capital Athens, where the WTE is based.

It will focus on promoting the development of taekwondo through mutual cooperation programmes between the Kukkiwon and WTE.

This will include the taekwondo poom/dan promotions test, education, training and martial arts competitions.

WTE President Sakis Pragalos signed the MoU alongside Kukkiwon President Oh Hyundeuk.

"It is the first time that Kukkiwon signs such an MoU in Europe," said Pragalos.

"Through this partnership, all taekwondo diplomas and certificates will be issued directly in Europe, and the organisation of high quality taekwondo events will embrace a common ground for both parties."

Oh added: "Kukkiwon is the World Taekwondo headquarters, and WTE has the most member nations among continental unions.

"Olympic taekwondo has been developing only since 2000 Olympics, so Kukkiwon wants to spread out the function of martial arts through 'Hanmadang' which could attract the whole of taekwondo such as self-defence, jump-kicking, taekwondo aerobics and so on.

"This MoU will contribute in developing the authentic martial arts taekwondo in Europe, and I hope it will be a good opportunity for cooperation between Kukkiwon and WTE."

The Kukkiwon, based in South Korean capital Seoul, is the official taekwondo governing organisation set-up by the country's Government.

A "hanmadang" is a taekwondo festival.
