Nicholas Heiner extended his lead at the top of the Finn European Championships in Cádiz.

The Dutch sailor had enjoyed a strong opening three races on the first two days of competition.

He continued his form by winning the first race on day three before ending 17th and fifth in the closing two races of the day.

The 17th place is not currently counted towards the Dutchman’s score, with a discard now coming into play for the highest scoring result.

It leaves Heiner on a net score of 16 points after three days of competition.

He moved a further four points clear of second place Edward Wright, the Briton now nine behind the leader.

Sweden’s Max Salminen completed the current podium places following a strong day that saw the reigning world champion record second and fifth place finishes.

With a discarded 31st place to his name, results of 11th and 18th have dampened his chances of catching the leader.

Salminen is currently 21 points adrift on Heiner on a score of 37.

He lies one point clear of defending champion Jonathan Lobert.

The Frenchman boosted his medal prospects by earning a victory in the second race of the day.

Competition is set to continue until Saturday (March 17).
