The two teams began the day with five wins and two defeats to their names at Curl Aberdeen, leaving them in a strong position in the standings behind already qualified Scotland.

Canada, led by skip Tyler Tardi, ensured their spot in the next round of the competition by overcoming Russia 7-5.

The result ensured Canada bettered their 2017 performance, where they missed out on the last four after losing a play-off.

"It feels pretty good to qualify after last year, that was disappointing to say the least," said Tardi.

"We fought to get back here and are really proud that we were able to come back and make the play-offs.

"We've got one more game left and it’s a big one.

"It'll determine whether or not we get hammer in the first game, so we'll stay focused to go into the play-offs and hopefully we'll win."

The US will also have hopes of finishing second, after they beat Switzerland 8-3 to seal their spot in the next round.

The result left Switzerland as one of three teams who have a record of four wins and four defeats.

They will hope a victory in the final round robin matches could see them progress, but Germany and Norway could also advance.

Norway were able to clinch the fourth and final spot in the women's semi-finals.

They earned a 7-6 victory over Switzerland to move to five wins and four defeats.

It proved enough to advance as rivals United States and South Korea both lost matches to end with four wins and five losses.

Switzerland also ended on the same record.

Norway advance to a semi-final against Sweden, who won all nine of their round robin ties.

Second place Canada will face China tomorrow.
