Finland's Krista Pärmäkoski returned to winning ways following the break for the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang as she claimed victory in the women's 10 kilometres classic race at the International Ski Federation Cross-Country World Cup in Lahti.

Pärmäkoski, winner of two bronze medals and a silver at Pyeongchang 2018, led from start to finish to reign supreme in front of her home crowd.

The 27-year-old stopped the clock at 24min 37.4sec to beat Russian Natalia Nepryaeva, who competed at Pyeongchang 2018 as part of the Olympic Athletes from Russia team.

Norway's Marit Bjørgen, the most decorated Winter Olympian of all time, came through to take the bronze medal.

The result had little impact on the overall FIS World Cup standings, with Norwegian Heidi Weng, fifth today, still in control at the top with 1,396 points.

Weng's compatriot Ingvild Flugstad Østberg remains her closest challenger on 1,191 points.

"During the race my both my body and the skis were working great," said Pärmäkoski.

"I raced on this same pair of skis in Planica where I got my first World Cup win.

"This is my winning pair of skis.

"I was very confident and I am very happy to win in front of the home audience."

The men's 15km honours were secured by Kazakhstan's Alexey Poltoranin, who recorded his 11th distance win on the World Cup circuit in a time of 33:11.9.

Russia's Alexander Bolshunov was nine seconds adrift in silver medal position, while Iivo Niskanen added another podium result for the host nation, finishing third.

Yesterday's sprint races were won by world champions as Norway's Maiken Caspersen Falla triumphed in the women's event and Federico Pellegrino of Italy emerged victorious in the men's competition.

Falla beat Olympic sprint gold medallist Stina Nilsson of Sweden and her team-mate Hanna Falk by clocking 2:54.83.

Pellegrino became the most successful sprint athlete at the World Cup as he clinched his 10th win in 3:16.73.

Russia's Gleb Retivykh took second place and Norway's Johannes Høsflot Klæbo, the leader on the overall standings, was third.

The FIS Cross-Country World Cup campaign is due to continue with a women's sprint event in Drammen in Norway on Wednesday (March 7).
