Liesette Bruinsma of The Netherlands and Great Britain’s Stephen Clegg broke their own world records in becoming the first medallists of the 2018 World Para Swimming World Series in Copenhagen.

The crowd inside the Bellahoej Svoemmestadion had only just settled into their seats for the first night of finals when Bruinsma broke the 100 metres freestyle S11 world record in the opening race, clocking 01min 07.05sec.

"It feels very good," Bruinsma said.

"I wanted to swim a fast race, and I hoped it was so fast that I would swim a new world record.

"And it was, so I’m really proud of myself.

"I can learn a lot of things from this race for the future."

Despite beating her previous world best time by 0.01 seconds, Bruinsma’s points tally was not enough to take home the gold medal, which instead went to Great Britain’s Eleanor Robinson, who is in the S6 category, with 976 points.

The 16-year-old’s total was nine points more than the points tally of Bruinsma and France’s Claire Supiot, in the S8 class, who jointly claimed the silver medal.

As with last year's inaugural World Series circuit, all races feature swimmers of various classifications with winners determined by a points system.

A total of 215 swimmers from 26 countries are competing in the Danish capital, with 28 medal events being contested.

Less than 10 minutes later, Robinson was back in the pool to secure her second title of the night.

The Briton showed no sign of fatigue as she registered a points tally of 934 points to claim gold in the women’s 50m butterfly.

Hungary’s Zsófia Konkoly, in the S9 category, finished second and Germany’s Naomi Maike Schnittger, who is in the S12 class, finished third.

In between Robinson’s gold medal performances, another British swimmer had the stadium on its feet as Clegg set a 50m butterfly S12 world record, less than 24 hours after breaking it in the heats.

The 22-year-old stopped the clock in a time of 25.24sec- over half a second quicker than his previous mark - to take the title ahead of his compatriot Andrew Mullen, in the S5 category, and Slovenia’s S4 swimmer Darko Duric, who earned bronze.

In the men’s 50m backstroke, Mullen upgraded from silver to gold, finishing over 100 points clear of Germany’s S9 swimmer Malte Braunschweig,.with Norway’s S9 athlete Kristoffer Voldengen Hansen third.

More British success came in the men’s 100m freestyle as Thomas Hamer in the S14 category secured gold ahead of S9 swimmer Lewis White and Bas Takken, an S10 Netherlands swimmer.

White went one better in the men’s 400m freestyle as he was the only swimmer to pass 900 points in the final to win the gold medal.

Norway’s S7 swimmer Andreas Skaar Bjornstad  was White’s nearest challenger, while Takken picked up his second bronze medal of the night.

White then rounded off his evening with a silver medal in the men’s 50m freestyle behind Switzerland’s Stephan Fuhrer, from the S5 category, with S9 swimmer Joao Pedro Drumond Olivia taking bronze -  Brazil’s only medal from the first session of finals.

The women’s 400m freestyle final saw a British one-two as S9 swimmer Toni Shaw took the title ahead of S6 category Maisie Summers-Newton.

France’s Supiot claimed the bronze medal before taking gold in the women’s 50m freestyle with a points tally of 956.

Netherlands’ S10 athlete Chantalle Zijderveld took the silver medal and bronze went to Robinson.

Zijderveld from the SB9 category bettered her silver by taking gold in the women’s 100m breaststroke final.

British SB14 swimmer Louise Fiddes was second, finishing one point ahead of Norway’s SB4 competitor Sarah Louise Rung.

The Netherlands’ dominant performance continued with victory in the men’s 100m breaststroke as SB9 swimmer Duncan van Haaren won gold with 993 points.

Great Britain’s Conner Morrison, from the SB14 category, took silver and Hong Kong’s Wa Kit Choi, from the same category, earned bronze.

But Evers was not to be denied gold on the night as he won the 100m butterfly.

The silver mdal went to Hong Kong’s S14 athlete Wai Lok Tang and bronze to Jordan Catchpole of Britain, from the same category.
