Germany’s Victoria Bieneck and Isabel Schneider recorded a shock victory over Brazil's Agatha Bednarczuk and Eduarda Lisboa to reach the semi-finals of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Tour event in Fort Lauderdale.

Bieneck and Schneider, the 24th seeds, overcame their opponents, ranked 10th, 21-16, 22-20 at the Lauderdale Beach Park Center Court in Florida in this five-star tournament.  

Bieneck and Schneider are now due to face another Brazilian pair, Carolina Horta and Taiana Lima, in the last four.

Horta and Lima booked their place in the semi-finals with a 21-19, 23-25, 15-13 victory against Karla Borger and Margareta Kozuch of Germany.

It was a day full of surprises in the women's event as second seeds Melissa Humana-Paredes and Sarah Pavan of Canada were beaten by Summer Ross and Brooke Sweat of the United States.

Ross and Sweat claimed a battling 22-20, 25-23 win to set up a meeting with Brazil's Fernanda Alves and Barbara Seixas, who defeated fourth seeds Barbora Hermannova and Marketa Slukova of the Czech Republic 21-14, 21-15.

In the men's tournament, top seeds Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena of the US safely progressed to the quarter-finals after they beat Brazilians Gustavo Carvalhaes and Vitor Felipe 21-17, 21-17.

Olympic champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Oscar Schmidt of Brazil were not able to join them in the last eight as they crashed out with defeat to Aleksandrs Samoilovs and Janis Smedins of Latvia.

Samoilovs and Smedins earned a straightforward 21-17, 21-16 victory against the Rio 2016 gold medallists to secure their spot in the next round.

The FIVB World Tour event is due to continue tomorrow.
