Three of the top four men duly progressed to the semi-finals of the 2018 International Table Tennis Federation Africa Top 16 Cup in Nairobi, but for Nigeria's 43-year-old Segun Toriola it proved a step too far.

Egypt's Omar Assar and Ahmed Ali Saleh emerged victorious, as did Toriola's compatriot Quadri Aruna at the Moi International Sports Centre.

But for the fourth seed and seven-times Olympian there was defeat at the hands of the Republic of Congo's Saheed Idowu, who reached tomorrow's semi-finals 11-6, 4-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10.

Ironically, Segura's ITTF Africa Cup win in 2008 came in Congolese capital Brazzaville.

"All I have to say is to thank God, I trained and believed in myself which helped me to defeat Segun Toriola," said Idowu.

"My training with Quadri Aruna in Portugal has helped me to improve my skills.

"I am glad it paid off."

Idowu will now meet Assar, the top seed, who booked his last four place courtesy of success against Tunisia's Thaeur Mamia 11-9, 11-6, 12-10, 10-12, 11-3.

Meanwhile, in the opposite half of the draw, Aruna, the number two seed and defending champion, will meet Ali Saleh, the third seed.

Saleh had resisted a brave challenge from Algeria's Sami Kherouf before coming through 11-8, 6-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-9.

Aruna ended the hopes of Ghana's Derek Abrefa by a 11-2, 11-9, 11-1, 11-8 score.

Meanwhile in the women’s competition, Cameroon's Sarah Hauffou, beaten in the quarter-finals at last year's Africa Cup in Agadir, went one better in Kenya.

The 31-year-old Parisian lawyer caused a big upset to account for Nigeria's second seed Olufunke Oshonaike, who won this Cup two years ago, coming through 11-6, 12-14, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8.

Algeria's Lynda Loghraibi accounted for Egypt's Farah Abdel-Aziz, the third seed, 7-11, 6-11, 11-9, 5-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6.

But the remaining two women's quarter-finals went to form as top seed Dina Meshref of Nigeria beat Christy Bristol of Seychelles 11-3, 11-3, 11-7, 11-4, and Egypt's fourth seed Offiong Edem beat Tunisia's Safa Saidani 5-11, 11-7, 3-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-8.
