The South Koreans are sending 10 athletes to compete at the Ice Arena in the Polish town of Tomaszów Mazowiecki from tomorrow.

After failing to claim a gold medal in either of the last two boys' World Junior Short Track Speed Skating Championship tournaments, Hong Kyunghwan, Lee Juneseo and Park Janghyuk will be under pressure to bring titles back to South Korea.

Han Soolim could be the Koreans' brightest hope in the girls' events having recorded personal best times of 44.53sec and 1min 41.03sec in the 500 metres and 1,000m events respectively.

Home hopes could rest on Kamila Stormowska, who is familiar with the track at the Tomaszów Mazowiecki Ice Arena, having recorded a 500m personal best of 44.54sec at the venue.

There is also a lot of optimism around Singaporean skaters after Cheyenne Goh became the country's first-ever Winter Olympian at Pyeongchang 2018.

Trevor Tan, the national men's under-18 record holder in 500m, 1,000m and 1,500m, says Goh has him inspired to perform this weekend.

"Cheyenne worked really hard leading to the Winter Olympics, and to see her efforts pay off really inspired me to work harder," he is reported as saying by The New Paper.

"My current goal is to qualify for the 2020 Youth Winter Olympics, so this World Juniors will be a stepping stone to gain more experience.

"The next World Juniors will be the qualifiers for the Youth Winter Olympics, so I'm going to work much harder to get there, hopefully."

Qualification rounds will get underway tomorrow before the competitive racing on Saturday (March 3) and Sunday (March 4).
