Several of the seeded women's teams lost as pool stage matches got underway at the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Beach Volleyball World Tour event at Fort Lauderdale Beach Park Center Court in Florida.

German duo Kim Behrens and Sandra Ittlinger, who are seeded at 23, led the charge with a 15-21, 22-20, 15-13 win over tenth-seeded Brazilian pair Agatha Bednarcuk and Eduarda Lisboa.

They then secured the Pool G title by defeating Joy Stubbe and Marleen van Iersel of The Netherlands 21-16, 21-12.

Stubbe and Van Iersel had beaten seventh seeded Swiss pairing Joana Heidrich and Anouk Verge-Depre earlier in the day,

Another outsider German pair also caused a shock as Karla Borger and Margareta Kozuch secured the Pool E title thanks to a 21-18, 21-17 win over 12th seeds Alix Klineman and April Ross of the United States, followed by a 21-15, 21-14 victory against Ukrainians Valentyna Davidova and Ievgeniia Shchypkova.

Davidova and Shchypkova had recorded a surprise victory over Brazilian duo Maria Antonelli and Carolina Algado prior to their loss to Borger and Kozuch.

In the men's draw, Olympic champions Alison Cerutti and Bruno Schmidt of Brazil set up a match against Rio 2016 bronze medallists Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of The Netherlands.
