Colombia Heroicos celebrated their first victory of the World Series of Boxing season by edging Caciques Venezuela in front of a local crowd in Atlántico.

The teams had been earlier this month, with a 3-2 away defeat leaving the Colombia Heroicos without a victory after their opening two Group A matches.

Martinez Rivas gave the Colombia Heroicos an ideal start to their home clash, emerging as the winner of an under 49 kilogram light flyweight bout.

He produced a strong display throughout his clash with Luis Jesus Polanco Vasquez, winning each round to secure a unanimous points victory from the judges.

Two awarded him the bout by a 50-41 score, while the third judge viewed him to be a 50-42 winner.

Yoel Finol levelled the tie for Caciques Venezuela, coming out in top of tightly fought 56kg bantamweight clash with Jhon Martinez Meza.

He was awarded a unanimous victory by the judges, although the 48-47 score reflected the close nature of the contest.

Christiann Palacio was a narrow winner in the men’s 64kg light welterweight division, earning a split decision win over the Colombia Heroicos’ John Gutierrez Agudelo.

Palacio was given the verdict 49-46 and 48-47 by two judges, with the third scoring the contest 48-47 in Agudelo’s favour.

The result left Colombia Heroicos requiring victories in the two remaining bouts of the fixture, which they were achieved in impressive fashion.

Jorge Vivas Palacios secured a unanimous points win over Endry Saavedra in the 75kg middleweight division to level the contest again.

Colombia Heroicos and Caciques Venezuela now both have one win to their credit, although the former have played one extra fixture.

Both teams lie behind the Cuba Domadores in the standings, the group leaders having won both their matches.

The second Group A tie of week four is set to take place next Tuesday (February 27), when the Domadores head to Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent for an away tie.

The Domadores will be in confident mood heading into their contest against the Uzbek Tigers in the Universal Sport Complex.

Astana Arlans Kazakhstan will feature in the third tie of the week, as the defending champions take on the Russian-based Patriot Boxing Team to Kokshetau City in Group C tomorrow.
