Monterrey is set to host the second event of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Race Walking Challenge.

Competition is set to take place in the Mexican city over two days at the event, which is known as the Jerzy Hausleber Memorial.

Action begins tomorrow with the men’s 20 kilometres, with both men’s and women’s 50km races then contested on Sunday (February 25).

Maria Guadalupe González will provide the main chance of home success, with the Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist leading their challenge in the women’s event.

González earned a silver medal in the women’s 20km race at last year’s World Athletics Championships in London.

She also finished as the runner-up in the women’s Race Walking Challenge standings last year, having won the series in 2016.

Caio Bonfim will be among the favourites for success in the men’s event, with the Brazilian having finished second in the series last year.

Canada’s Evan Dunfee is also expected to challenge for victory, having triumphed in Monterrey during the 2017 season.

The two-day event will be used as the Mexican Athletics Federation’s selection trials for major upcoming competitions.

This includes the Barranquilla 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games, which will take place in July.

Athletes will be looking to secure places at the World Race Walking Team Championships in Taicang, which will take place on May 5 and 6.

The IAAF Race Walking Challenge season began in Adelaide earlier this month.

Rio Maior in Portugal will host the third event on April 7, before La Coruna in Spain stages competition on June 2.

The Around Taihu event in China brings the series to a close with racing from September 23 to 26.
