Fake letters have been received by some Gold Coast residents, informing them they were set to host a Sri Lankan family as part of the Commonwealth Games.

A letter, which used the Gold Coast 2018 logo and was claimed to have been signed off by Games chairman Peter Beattie, was posted on Reddit.

It claimed to inform a resident that they had been selected to host a Sri Lankan family of 11 as part of a cultural initiative, and has already been blasted for racism.

"These people will suffer tremendous upheaval and it will take some time for them to adapt to our way of life," the letter states.

"Within the next month you will hear from our head office regarding the arrival date, routing and name of selected family.

"We shall include some recipes from Sri Lanka so that you may prepare their favourite dishes.

"So as not to inconvenience you, we shall provide adequate supplies of curry powder, rice, chicken and powdered goats milk.

"With Council approval, we will provide you with two milting goats to ensure fresh milk can be made available for the family.

"Free immunisation will be given to you and your family against typhus, cholera, tuberculosis and leprosy."

Beattie has responded to the hoax letter, with the Gold Coast 2018 chairman stating it is "a forgery".

"Sadly there are some nasty people in the world," Beattie wrote on Twitter.

"Please ignore it and tell your friends it is a forgery.

"The Games are going to be fantastic."

Gold Coast 2018 have also stated that they have handed the fake letter to Queensland Police, with an investigation now set to take place to determine its source.

The letter appeared to have been largely dismissed, with commenters on Reddit largely claiming its creator had been hoping to stir up racial tensions.

It is unclear how many of the fake letters were distributed.
