Jessica Peris, the daughter of Olympic hockey gold medallist Nova Peris, has reportedly failed a drugs test which appears to have ended her hopes of competing at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The sprinter withdrew from the Commonwealth Games selection trials for athletics after a banned substance was detected by the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA), it has been claimed.

According to the Herald Sun, confirmation is expected to be made within days, with her B-sample set to be tested.

It is currently not known what substance has been found.

Peris had been in contention for a place on the Australian athletics team at their home Games, having recorded personal bests in both the 100 and 200 metres in recent months.

This included clocking a B-standard qualifying time of 23.31sec in the 200m in December, before lowering her personal best to 23.13.

She also achieved a personal best 11.41 in the 100m on January 6, beating Riley Day in a race in Queensland.

In Peris' absence, Day claimed victories in both the 100m and 200m at the Australian trials for the Commonwealth Games, which took place at the Carrara Stadium in Gold Coast over the weekend.

The venue will stage the Commonwealth Games competition in April.

In 2016, Peris' former partner, National Rugby League player Shaun Kenny-Dowall, was cleared of domestic violence charges allegedly involving her.

He had been facing 11 charges, but they were dismissed with Peris described as "an unreliable witness".

Nova Peris was a member of the Australia hockey team that claimed gold at the Atlanta 1996 Olympics, becoming the first indigenous Australian to top a podium at the Games.

She then switched sports to athletics for the Kuala Lumpur 1998 Commonwealth Games, where she earned gold medals in the 200m and 4x100m relay.

Australia will be represented by a team of 111 members in athletics, with the full selection set to be made in the coming days.

The first 14 athletes were announced last month.

The Commonwealth Games will take place from April 4 to 15.
