Expectations were high after the Asian record set by Japan’s women in the previous evening’s team pursuit at the Velodrom Nasional Malaysia, following the opening day gold medals from Tomoyuki Kawabata in the men’s keirin and the men’s team pursuit.

Hashimoto was the first to deliver as he won with 139 points, with the United Arab Emirates rider Mirza El-Hammadi taking the silver medal with 134 and bronze going to Kazakhstan’s Artyom Zakharov, who scored 122.

The 28-year-old Fukaya secured his gold in the final men’s race of the night, clocking 1min  01.686sec.

The silver medal went to Chinese Taipei’s Shih Hsin Hsiao, who clocked 1:01.821 ahead of Iran’s Mohammad Daneshvarkhourram, who recorded 1:01.875.

International Cycling Union President David Lappartient was present in the arena.

Amar Danial Masri fell just short of delivering a home gold in the junior 1km time trial as he could not match Thailand’s Wachirawit Saenkhamwong, who won in 1:03.397.

Masri’s time of 1:03.735 was enough for the silver medal ahead of Kazakhstan’s Viktor Golov, who clocked 1:03.873.

China’s Jiafang Hu won the junior women’s sprint, holding off her compatriot Min Lei.

The bronze medal went to Kazakhstan’s Anastassiya Shapovalova.

South Korea won both the junior and women’s individual pursuit races.

Jumi Lee took gold in the elite 3km race in 3:35.170, with the silver medal going to Chinese Taipei’s Ting Ying Huang, who clocked 3:37.741.

China’s Menglu Ma won the bronze medal, recording 3:36.543.

In the 2km junior race, Jieun Shin was victorious in 2:29.150 as the silver medal went to Japan’s Fukogu Takahashi with 2:30.520.

Chinese Taipei’s Tzu Hui Lai claimed the bronze medal with a time of 2:33.342.

The Championships are set to continue tomorrow and conclude on Tuesday (February 20).
