The Hungarian city played the Championships back in 2016, with last year’s event being held in Maribor, Slovenia.

Having also hosted the event in 2004, Györ are now gearing up to welcome shooters for the third time for the competition.

A record 670 athletes are scheduled to take part, with 48 countries represented at the Audi Arena.

Zsolt Borkai, Mayor of Györ, welcomed the European Shooting Confederation back to the Hungarian city.

“Györ is a sport city,” he said.

“Last year our city organised the summer European Youth Olympic Festival.

“The event was a considerable success and the leaders of European Olympic Committees called it as the greatest EYOF of all time.

“In my opinion sport has much bigger influence than the sport itself.

“Of course it also is important but we have at moment many developing processes with city and sport clubs.

“Sport is method for young people to develop themselves, we have organised tens of young boys and girls for working to this Championship."

“We want to make Györ well known and sport is one of the best ways to do so and that is why we want to have different sports events in Györ and also support them," Zsolt added.

“I’m proud that we can co-operate for the second time with European Championship in shooting sport.

“Sports have generally much larger influence to the city and to the region, but you have to cooperate and find right possibilities.”

Air pistol, air rifle and running target competitions are scheduled to take place in the men’s, women’s and junior categories during the Championships.

Competition will begin tomorrow, with a qualification event for the Buenos Aires Youth Olympic Games getting proceedings underway.

The Championships officially starts on Monday (February 19), with competition running until February 25.
