Wrestlers from North African nations sealed several gold medals in the junior competition on day three of the African Wrestling Championships at the Alfred Diete-Spif Civic Centre in Port Harcourt.

Gamal Abdelnaser Hanafy Mohamed of Egypt came out on top in the freestyle 57 kilogram category by virtue of VPO1 after a close match with Algeria's Salah Eddine Kateb had ended 5-5.

The bronze medal was shared by Helmi Ajimi of Tunisia and Seitonkumo Richard of host country Nigeria after victories against Gilbert Mbevoni Kaboche of Kenya and Hermanus Nicolaas van den Berg of South Africa, respectively.

Algeria did, however, managed to clinch the top prize in the 65kg event courtesy of Fares Lakel, who defeated Tunisia's Kaireddine Ben Telili 9-6 to finish top of the pile.

South Africa's Francois Rossouw beat Hamza Elbahja of Marocco by a convincing 11-0 scoreline to round off the podium.

Egypt claimed another freestyle gold thanks to Samy Hamdy Amin Rabie Moustafa's emphatic 11-0 victory over South Africa's Matthew Trevor Barlett in the 74kg competition.

Morocco’s Mohamed Chakir defeated Mokase Robert Ndumbe of Cameroon 18-13 to secure bronze.

The Greco roman 55kg category was won by Mourtada Naanaa of Algeria who came out on top against Abderrazak Rouinbi of Morocco by VPO1 after a tight 1-1 scoreline.

Namibia's Romio Ricardo Goliath beat home athlete Ojibola Olanrewaju 16-13 to take bronze.

Elsewhere, Egypt's Hassan Hassan Ahmed Mohamed thrashed Radhwen Tarhouni of Tunisia 9-0 to win gold in the 63kg category.

Abdelmalek Merabet of Algeria overcame home favourite Adekunle Julius 12-6 to secure bronze.

There was yet more success for Egypt in the 67kg event as Mohamed Ibrahim Elsayed Ibrahi Elsayed beat Moroccan Mustapha Afiraou 12-1 to lift the title.

Amet Sadou secured another medal for Algeria in the small final as he came out on top against Alfred Ebilade Parkistan of Nigeria to clinch bronze.

Tunisia's Sarra Hamdi won the women's 50kg event thanks to a convincing 16-5 victory against Nada Medani Ashour Abdalla Mohamed of Egypt.

Nigeria's Gloria Ndubisi Ojieh secured bronze with a 16-5 win over Ibtissem Doudou of Algeria.

Cameroon's Rosine Nsta Assouga secured her country's only gold medal of the day in the women's 53kg competition with a 4-2 victory over Tunisia's Siwar Bousetta.

Egypt's Tarek Mohamed Morad Abbas thrashed Gloria Ofundo Ondewariowei of Nigeria 11-0 to complete the podium line up.

The competition continues tomorrow with the medal matches in the senior freestyle events headlining the day.
