Only four teams are left standing in both the men's and women's competitions at the Badminton Asia Team Championships following today's quarter-final matches at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in Alor Setar.

China, the favourites for the men's competition, had to recover from a 1-0 deficit against India in their quarter-final after six-time Badminton World Federation (BWF) Superseries winner Srikanth Kidambi beat Shi Yuqi 14-21, 21-16, 21-7 in the tie's opener.

Two doubles victories courtesy of He Jiting and Tan Qiang and Han Chengkai and Zhou Haodong, along with a singles victory for Qiao Bin, however, ensured they continued their quest for the gold medal.

China will now face hosts Malaysia in the semi-finals after they defeated Hong Kong by a comfortable 3-0 scoreline.

Lee Chong Wei, a three-time Olympic silver medallist, won 21-15, 22-20 over Ng Ka Long which was one of the highlights of their day.

The other semi-final will see South Korea face defending champions Indonesia.

Indonesia beat fourth seeds Japan by a 3-0 scoreline with Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Mohammad Ahsan putting in the most impressive performance for the champions with a 21-17, 21-15 win over Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonodain in the doubles.

South Korea, on the other hand, came through a difficult tie against unseeded Thailand to book their place in the last four.

It had looked like Thailand had the momentum in their favour after winning the doubles match to level the contest at 1-1 following Son Wan-ho's victory in the singles earlier on.

The South Koreans, however, wrestled back control and eventually ran out 3-1 winners.

In the women’s event, favourites Japan thrashed Chinese Taipei 3-0 with none of their players dropping a game in any of their three matches.

They will now play Indonesia, who recovered from going 1-0 down against India to win 3-1.

Second seeds and defending champions China, who ran out 3-1 winners against Thailand in their quarter-final, will face South Korea in the last-four after they defeated hosts Malaysia 3-0.

The four semi-finals across the tournament will take place tomorrow (February 10), before the competition concludes with the finals on Sunday (February 11).
