Chinese Taipei earned a narrow victory in the men's team event to secure progression to the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Alor Setar, Malaysia.

Both Chinese Taipei and Thailand had triumphed on the opening day of matches at the Stadium Sultan Abdul Halim.

A 21-19, 21-17 win for Khosit Phetpradab in the opening men's singles match against Wang Tzu-wei gave Thailand an ideal start to proceedings.

Chinese Taipei responded impressively with a triumph in the first doubles match, before Hsu Jen-hao beat Kantaphon Wangchareon 21-17, 21-16.

A second doubles success ensured Chinese Taipei the victory, but Pannawit Thongnaum's 21-18, 21-19 win over Lin Yu-hsein gave Thailand a consolation in their 3-2 loss.

While Chinese Taipei have now progressed from Group C, Thailand and Malaysia will battle for second spot.

It follows the host nation's 5-0 win over Myanmar today, but Malaysia now face the challenging task of beating Chinese Taipei in their final group match with Thailand having an easier clash against Myanmar.

It will be the only quarter-final position in doubt in the men’s event, with the other spots already allocated.

China handed a second successive 5-0 defeat to Singapore in Group A, with the winners now set to go head-to-head with Hong Kong to decide who qualifies in first position.

There were also 5-0 victories for South Korea and Japan in Group B, as they overcame Kazakhstan and Nepal respectively.

South Korea and Japan are now assured of last eight spots prior to their head-to-head clash, with Kazakhstan and Nepal now hoping to end their participation with a win when they meet.

India were 5-0 winners over Maldives in Group D, putting them level with defending champions Indonesia, who had earlier beaten The Philippines by the same score.

Both winning countries have gone through.

In the women's competition, Indonesia and defending champions China were assured of advancing from Group Z following the latter's 5-0 win over Singapore.

They will meet either South Korea or Chinese Taipei, who have ensured themselves of progression from Group X following the former's 5-0 win against Maldives.

The winners of both groups will be determined tomorrow.

Hosts Malaysia have eased through Group Y after they followed up a 4-1 win over Vietnam by brushing aside The Philippines 5-0.

Malaysia currently lie behind Thailand in the standings, with their rivals securing their second successive 5-0 win by brushing aside Vietnam.

Top seeds Japan began their campaign with a 5-0 demolition of Hong Kong.

They will now take on India tomorrow to decide the Group W winners.

The Oceania Badminton Team Championships also continued in the city of Hamilton in New Zealand.

The hosts and Australia had won both of their matches in the men's and women’s team competitions yesterday, meaning their teams went head-to-head to decide the competition winners today.

Australia claimed a 3-2 win over New Zealand in the men's competition to win gold, while Tahiti secured a 4-1 success against Fiji.

Australia replicated their success against New Zealand in the women's event with another 3-2 win, while Fiji gained revenge against Tahiti by winning their clash 5-0.

Both the Asian and Oceania competitions are acting as a qualifier for the Thomas and Uber Cups, the biennial World Championships contested by men's and women's national teams.

By winning the Oceania team events, Australia have qualified for both competitions, which will take place later this year in Thailand.

They will join the hosts and defending Thomas Cup champions Denmark in the men's event, along with Uber Cup holders China and the host nation in the women's competition.

The two tournaments will take place from May 20 to 27 in Bangkok.
