The squad is largely inexperienced with only two of the 12 athletes boasting previous Commonwealth Games appearances - heavyweight Cheavon Clark, who represented Jamaica at Glasgow 2014, and welterweight Pat McCormack who also competed in Glasgow.

McCormack said he expects to be competing for gold in Australia.

"It's great to be selected for the Commonwealth Games," he said.

"I competed at the one in Glasgow but I was young and inexperienced then and did not win a medal.

"Since then I have been to the World Championships twice, won two silver medals at the Europeans and been to an Olympic Games so I will have a lot more confidence and experience going into the competition this time.

"I have always wanted to go travelling to Australia, so to be able to go there through boxing is even better.

"I know it will be a tough tournament but I have trained hard and I am going there to win gold."

McCormack's twin brother Luke will also be making his Commonwealth Games debut at Gold Coast 2018, at lightweight.

"Competing alongside my twin will make the tournament even more exciting, and if we both come home with gold, it will definitely put us out there," he said.

"We just need to make sure that we perform on the day."

Super heavyweight Frazer Clarke, who sparred with world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua last year, bantamweight European champion Peter McGrail, lightweight European Championship bronze medallist Calum French, middleweight Ben Whittaker and 2016 Olympian Galal Yafai, a light flyweight, complete the men's line-up.

Middleweight European champion Natasha Gale, European silver medallists Sandy Ryan, welterweight, and Lisa Whiteside, flyweight, along with lightweight newcomer Paige Murney, are the four female boxers who will represent England at the upcoming Games.

Whiteside expressed her delight at being selected.

"It is absolutely fantastic to be selected for the Commonwealth Games, it will be my first multi-sport event and to represent England on the Gold Coast feels unreal," she said.

"Boxing's major tournaments don't always get covered on TV, so to be competing and knowing that my friends and family back home will be able to watch is going to be out of this world.

"I am feeling confident, my ultimate goal is to go out there and win that gold medal.

"I have a few tournaments coming up in preparation, and I will make sure that when I arrive on the Gold Coast that I'm the fittest and strongest that I've ever been."

England Chef de Mission Sarah Winckless added: "English boxing is in an extremely strong position and to be able to welcome 12 boxers to the team this week give me great pleasure.

"The women's side of the sport goes from strength to strength and I look forward to working with our four talented female athletes.

"Our male team is also strong and notably contains two brothers, Pat and Luke McCormack, and two Olympians alongside 10 debutants.

"It is an exciting mix and one I look forward to supporting at the Games."

The boxing competition at Gold Coast will take place at Oxenford Studios from April 5 to 14 with the Games taking place from April 4 to 15.
