Korea's unified women's ice hockey team lost their first match today, a 3-1 defeat against Sweden in a warm-up for the Winter Olympics, which are due to start here this week.

It marked the only warm-up game for the Korean team before their historic campaign begins later this week.

Four players from North Korea featured alongside the South Koreans at the Seonhak International Arena in Incheon.

The team, though, never recovered from conceding three goals in the opening period.

The result was not a surprise, however, as the Swedes are ranked fifth in the world in comparison with 22nd and 25th for South and North Korea respectively.

The Korean team are open their Olympic account against sixth-ranked Switzerland on Saturday (February 10).

There was strong support inside the stadium for the team but there was also a small protest against it outside.

A total of 12 players from North Korea will participate alongside 23 from the South in an enlarged squad it what marks the first occasion where the two countries have appeared side by side on the Olympic stage.

A squad of 22 of the 35 players will feature in each game, with at least three of these having to be North Korean.

They will compete under the name "Korea", with the unification flag displayed.

The team has been considered controversial by some, though, for political reasons as it is seen by some in the South Korea as a concession too far.

Switzerland, their opponents in their opening match, are among those to hav claimed it is unfair Korea have a larger squad of players to choose from then their rivals.
