Kazakhstan became the first team to book their place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Futsal Championships as they thrashed Poland 5-1 in Ljubljana.

The Kazakh side secured their last eight berth at the first time of asking as they dominated the Group B clash at the Arena Stožice.

Douglas Junior, Serik Zhamankulov, Taynan, Birzhan Orazov and Mikhail Pershin got on the scoresheet for Kazakhstan in a one-sided encounter.

Dominik Solecki was the only goalscorer for Poland, who need Kazakhstan to beat Russia by more than 5-1 if they are to qualify for the knock-out stages.

In Group A, 2014 champions Italy were held to a frustrating 1-1 draw with Serbia in their opening match of the competition.

Dragan Tomić broke the deadlock midway through the second half before Massimo De Luca found the net with a fortuitous equaliser for Italy.

The Asian Futsal Championships began today in Chinese Taipei as Malaysia got their campaign off to the perfect start with a 2-1 win over Vietnam.

Just as the match looked to be heading towards a draw, Awalluddin Mat Nawi struck a dramatic late winner to give Malaysia all three points at the Xinzhuang Gymnasium in New Taipei City.

In the other contest in Group A, hosts Chinese Taipei drew 2-2 with Bahrain.

Both tournaments are due to continue tomorrow.
