Kuczynski, who narrowly survived an impeachment vote in December following his links to a construction company at the centre of the widespread corruption scandal in Brazil, visited the venue alongside PanamSports President Neven Ilic and Lima 2019 head Carlos Neuhaus.

The Athletes' Village had been one of the main concerns for PanamSports and organisers amid fears the crucial project would not be ready on time for next year's Pan American Games.

Kuczynski attended the inauguration of the Village last September, held during the International Olympic Committee session in the Peruvian capital.

"We are proud to show to the world the progress we are making in the construction of the Athletes' Village and in our goal to put on the best ever Pan American and Parapan American Games," he said.

"It is crucial that such an important part of the Games is delivered on time and to a world class standard. 

"After today's visit, I can say with more confidence than ever that Lima 2019 will deliver an outstanding facility.

"The Pan American and Parapan American Games will be a historic first for Peru and will cement our capital city as a hub for culture, tourism and world-class sport. 

"I therefore ask all Peruvians to join us in supporting this wonderful project."

The Village, located in the heart of the Villa El Salvador district in the southeast of Lima, is due to include 1,096 apartments which will be home to approximately 10,000 athletes and coaches during the Games.

It is hoped that work at the facility, being constructed by Chilean consortium Besco-Besalco, will be completed by February 2019 - five months before the Opening Ceremony of the Pan American Games on July 26.

"When I visited the Athletes' Village construction site in September last year, I stated my optimism about the progress that was being made," said Ilic.

"Today, I saw that I was right to be optimistic. 

"The speed at which Lima 2019 are delivering such a high-quality Village is remarkable. 

"I have full confidence that the athletes of the Americas will enjoy a facility of the highest quality. 

"It will feel like a home away from home, with modern, comfortable accommodation, and state-of-the-art training facilities. 

"I would like to congratulate everyone involved in this process and encourage them to keep going – in 18 months' time they will realise they were part of something special."

The visit to the Village came before the Panam Sports Lima 2019 Technical and Coordination Commissions travelled to the city for two days of inspection meetings, which began today.
