Norway's Erik Valnes and Tiril Udnes Weng won the respective men's and women's under-23 sprint events as action continued today at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Junior World Championships in Goms in Switzerland.

Valnes came out on top in the men's A-final in front of compatriots Jan Thomas Jenssen and Even Northug.

In the women's A-final, Weng held off Switzerland's Nadine Faehndrich and Russia's Natalia Nepryaeva to take victory. 

The 21-year-old is the cousin of Heidi Weng, a winner of four FIS Nordic World Ski Championship gold medals and the Sochi 2014 Olympic bronze medallist in the 15 kilometres skiathlon.

Faehndrich spoke of her delight with her second-place finish today.

"I'm very happy with my performance and will do a few races here and then prepare for the Olympics," she said.

"It's fantastic to run against this backdrop."

Competition at the Championships is being shared by Goms and Kandersteg.  

It is due to continue tomorrow. 

As well as cross-country, ski jumping and Nordic combined are part of the programme.
