Olympic silver medallists Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin hold a 19-point lead with just three races to go in the Nacra 17 class as racing heated-up today at the Sailing World Cup in Miami.

It came on a day of far stronger winds on Biscayne Bay, just off Coconut Grove in the Florida city.

The Australian duo have suffered just one finish outside the top four across the first nine races and continued that form today with a first, a second and a third place finish.

This put them on 14 points overall once discarded results are considered.

"Today was great, quite fresh, which is tricky on a foiling boat," said Waterhouse.

"We scored a three, two, one but we threw away a few points in the first race due to an equipment malfunction, which was quite disappointing."

In a high-quality battle, Argentina's reigning Olympic champions Santiago Lange and Cecilia Carranza Saroli are second, though they have nearly matched the Australian team over the last five races.

Great Britain's John Gimson and Anna Burnet lie third, a further two points back, two points themselves in front of Rio 2016 bronze medallist Thomas Zajac of Austria, who is sailing with new team-mate Barbara Matz.

A total of 543 sailors from 50 nations are participating across the different categories.

France hold a 1-2 finish in the men's RS:X windsurfing standings.

Louis Giard is currently in the lead, on 33 points, six ahead of team-mate Pierre Le Coq.

The Netherlands' Kiran Badloe is third on 47.

Stefania Elfutina of Russia holds a slender lead in the corresponding women's RS:X category.

Her total of 33 points puts her three clear of Spain's Blanca Manchon.

Manchon did post a discarded 36th place in race one, though, meaning that another poor score could cause her to tumble down the leaderboard.

Flavia Tartaglini of Italy currently sits third, on 37 points.
