Competition at the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Longboard Surfing Championships in Wanning had to be cancelled today due to a lack of swell, making it impossible for the surfers to take to the waves.

Instead, the athletes, who had been preparing to continue their men's and women's longboard campaigns on Riyue Bay, were given an opportunity to rest.

Several surfers spent the "lay day" exploring local sites including the Dongshan Temple.

The ISA say they are optimistic that the swell will increase sufficiently for the competition to continue on the Chinese beach tomorrow (January 24).

United States won the first gold medal of the event yesterday.

They triumphed in the team competition.
