The fifth leg of the World Para Alpine Skiing World Cup in Tignes has been cancelled due to safety concerns.

Large amounts of deep and soft snow have fallen at the French resort, meaning the planned action between tomorrow and January 26 will not take place.

Tignes was due to host the first speed races of the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Paralympic season, with two days of downhill followed by a day of super-G.

The World Cup had already been delayed from its planned start yesterday due to heavy snowfall.

"The jury made the decision today to cancel the races due to the current snow conditions and concerns for safety of the athletes," said race director Ali Bombardier.

"Due to the recent large accumulation of snow, the entire race arena has too much soft snow to safely run speed events.

"Neither the time required to ensure a good racing surface, or the resources required to make this surface are available.

"We have another storm arriving Thursday night, which makes this time even tighter.

"We would like to thank Tignes and the Local Organising Committee for all their efforts.

"They have made a huge commitment.

"Unfortunately mother nature won this battle."

The next date for Para-skiers will be the World Cup Finals in Kimberley in Canada between February 8 and 11.

Races will be held in super-G, giant slalom and slalom.

This will be the last event before Pyeongchang 2018 which opens on March 9.
