The new ruling Executive Committee of the Rwanda Taekwondo Federation (RTF) has officially taken office.

Placide Bagabo has begun his tenure as President after an official handover ceremony at Champion Hotel in capital city Kigali.

He is taking over from outgoing President David Hakizimana and has now received the "instruments of power".

The ceremony was held in the presence of taekwondo officials from the country as well as members of the Ministry of Sports and Culture and the Rwanda National Sports and Olympic Committee.

Bagabo was previously secretary general with an official from the IYE Taekwondo Club now elected to replace him in this role.

Fabrice Elysee Mugorewase will serve as vice president.

The new President thanked Hakizimana for his "good leadership and work done in the last eight years".

He also pledged to work hard to take the sport to a new level during his four year tenure.

Rwanda has seen an increase in the number of taekwondo clubs in recent years, according to the RTF.

At the World Para Taekwondo Championships in London last year, Console Rukundo won gold in the K42 under-48 kilograms class.

The Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation is also active in the African country, working with refugees.
