Commonwealth Games 100 metres freestyle swimming champion Cate Campbell has revealed she will not be competing in the 200m event at her home Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast.

Her announcement comes despite the Australian two-time Olympic relay champion performing excellently at the recent New South Wales Championship in the 200m.

She claimed victory over the longer distance after being persuaded to participate by coach Simon Cusack.

However, the 25-year-old was on the brink of exhaustion after her victory, which was seemingly the catalyst for her decision to skip the competition at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in April.

"Simon [Cusack] said that I would have a healthy appreciation for the 100m after doing the 200m," Campbell said to SBS News.

"I was hoping if I do enough bad ones he would stop me doing them but the competitive edge in me just couldn't let me bomb out.

"I won't be doing one again in a hurry, they hurt a lot."

However, Campbell, who won three golds and one silver at the last Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, said she would compete in the event in exceptional circumstances.

"If my country needs me, if it's in dire straits, then I will come to its aid," she said.

"If I'm called upon, then I will step up but I'm really hoping that the young guys step up in that 200m and they can leave the old dogs to do the 100m."

The 2018 Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place from April 4 to 15.
