Germany will field a strong team for the first elite jumping event of the year as the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Cup Jumping Western European League competition heads to Leipzig.

The 2014 FEI World Cup champion Daniel Deusser, who currently sits fourth in the Western European League rankings, is one of those athletes and will be riding Cornet D-Amour, the same horse that helped him to success in Lyon four years ago.

The 37-year-old expressed his excitement for the upcoming competition due to take place Leipziger Messe tomorrow.

"It’s the first big competition of the year, and so I feel good and ready to go," the Rio 2016 bronze medallist said.

"I’m trying to get Cornet fit after his injury, so this is a good opportunity.

"The 48 points I currently have is usually about enough to ensure making the World Cup, so while I am going to Leipzig looking for a good result, my focus is on getting my horses fitter and stronger.

Deusser added: "Leipzig is a nice show from several points of view.

"The infrastructure is nice, and there are big crowds with the arena very full at the weekend.

"From the competitor’s point of view, it is a busy event which gives an opportunity to build up new horses and give the older horses a run."

Deusser will be joined by on the German team by Christian Ahlmann, an Olympic bronze medallist at Athens 2004, and and Sydney 2000 champion Marcus Ahning.

Event director Volk Wulff said: "n Leipzig, we offer high-class sport and an excellent exhibition and demonstration programme that appeals to all horse enthusiasts.

"Equestrian is a very popular sport in Germany and has a broad following throughout all walks of life."
