Nigeria narrowly overcame Libya 1-0 ©CAF

Nigeria and Rwanda moved a step closer to qualifying for the knockout round of the African Nations Championship as both sides recorded narrow Group C victories in Morocco.

The Nigerian side left it late to beat Libya 1-0, while Rwanda overcame Equatorial Guinea by the same scoreline at the Stade Ibn Batouta in Tangier.

The results leave Nigeria and Rwanda on four points from two matches, with Libya one point adrift in third.

Equatorial Guinea, hosts of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, were eliminated following their defeat to Rwanda.

Nigeria dominated the contest with Libya but had to wait until 11 minutes from time to score what proved to be the winning goal.

Libya, who were content to soak up pressure and launch counter-attacks, looked like they were going to hold out for a draw before Sunday Felaye found the net from close range from an Osas Okoro corner.

Rwanda and Equatorial Guinea played out a dull first half before the match sparked into life in the second.

Thierry Manzi headed home from a corner after 67 minutes to give Rwanda a deserved lead.

That meant Equatorial Guinea had to score an equaliser to remain in the tournament for home-based African players but they found Rwanda's goalkeeper Eric Ndayishimiye in fine form.

Ndayishimiye made several decent saves to thwart the Equatorial Guinea attack as Rwanda saw out a victory putting them in a good position to reach the next round.

The event is due to tomorrow as Angola play Cameroon and Congo face Burkina Faso in Group D at the Stade Adrar in Agadir.
